A TEN-year-old boy escaped serious injury after being sent flying by a bus.

The boy was initially knocked unconscious in the accident, which happened in pouring rain outside the Lancaster Veterinary Centre on Bowerham Road at 6pm yesterday (THURS).

A receptionist and nurse from the vets rushed outside to administer firs
t aid and roused the boy before paramedics arrived and took him to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Owner of the vets, James Glass, said police had later told him the boy had escaped with a bump to the head and a chip fracture of his shoulder.

Mr Glass has since seen the incident, which was recorded on the practice's CCTV cameras and witnessed by one of its clients who was in the waiting room.

"It could have been a lot worse," he said. "It looks awful on the camera and he was very lucky.

"He was with two other boys. One of them had already crossed the road and he stepped out about 10-15 seconds within a few feet of what looked like one of those community transport buses for elderly people.

"The bus whacked him about 20 feet down the road - there was nothing the driver could do."

Mr Glass said police had closed off the road, and tests were carried out on the bus's brakes.

Paramedics were called to several other road accidents as heavy rain lashed the area.
