Passengers at Carnforth Railway Station had a brief encounter of a watery kind last night as the station underpass became flooded in three feet of water.
Emergency services across the district had been issued with an extreme weather warning earlier in the day, advising of heavy rainfall forecast for the early evening.
Simon Withey, from Carnforth, was waiting with a friend for the train to Leeds. He said: "We'd got pretty wet getting onto the station but the underpass was dry when we went through at 7.25pm. When I left the platform at 7.55pm it was three feet deep under the west coast mainline.
There were some people stranded on platform two and others wet and risking injury and contamination from the rising sewer water. I saw one young man slip right under the water, and people were taking off their shoes and socks to get through.
I escorted some people off platform one instead of trying to brave the depths. I called the fire service and they arrived within four minutes. Fortunately no-one was injured. I've lived here for five years and never seen anything quite like it!"
A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call just after 8pm to say that there were a number of people stranded on the platform due to flooding in the underpass. Luckily, those that were trapped managed to exit via an alternative route and we began pumping out the underpass, which took approximately one hour to clear."
