THE Goverment is splashing out on free swimming for the over 60s and under 16s – and Lancaster City Council will decide next Tuesday whether to take them up on the offer.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has allocated £44,375 per year to cover the costs of providing free swimming for the over 60s in the district as part of a nationwide health initiative.

Councillors are expected to approve the receipt of the grant, and also to approve in principle the provision of free swimming for those under 16.

In addition, cash could be available to the city council for projects designed to modernise swimming pools, as long as they sign up to the free swimming scheme.

As much as £10million could be available to help fund quality swimming provision in the district over the next two years.
