Bailey is full of belief again

CARNFORTH'S prolific pro Ryan Bailey says he has no plans to end his remarkable run of scoring form just yet.

The South African has score 595 runs in his last five 3D Sports Northern League innings - and sandwiched in the middle was 142 as sub pro for East Lancs.

If he keeps up his current rate, he could challenge the Northern League record of 1,351 runs scored by Kendal's Terry Hunte in 1994.

And Bailey – who will captain Carnforth against Morecambe in a Twenty20 clash tonight, Friday – just wants to keep 'cashing in' after discovering his form in England after a poor season in domestic cricket.

"The only way it can stop is if I doubt myself. I have to believe in myself and that is the main ingredient in batting. I lost it back home and to get it back is awesome.

"I don't like to set myself targets because if you don't reach them, you end up chasing your own tail. You have just got to play every innings as it comes.

"When the runs are flowing, you have got to cash in because the hard times might come again.

"My hard time was last season when I got seven ducks - four of them first ball. It is rewarding, having been through the tough times and having a run like this."

Bailey says he is not surprised by his season so far where he has already reached 747 runs for the season from only nine innings.

Talk has arisen of a possible call up to the South African squad that has just began a tour of England, although Bailey is not optimistic.

He said: "To be honest I don't think I will get that because I have to perform domestically first and it is not a realistic goal for me this season.

"I know I have got to go home to score lots of runs domestically to make the A side and then take it from there. I am still 25, there is a process and I have to take one step at a time."

Bailey finished unbeaten on 126 in Carnforth's win at St Annes on Saturday, following his League-leading 162 not out at Netherfield in the previous game.

He said: "They were different innings. With the 162, we set the target so it was a different type of pressure.

"At St Annes, we were chasing and I knew I needed to get a big score for us to win. I was confident, it was about whether or not anyone else came off, luckily Adam Hornby came off (scoring 50) and that set us on the way to winning the game."

Bailey is happy to be shouldering the responsibility of scoring the bulk of the side's runs.

"We don't have lot of batsmen that are going to get big runs so I have taken up the responsibility of scoring most of the runs, and that's why I came over here.

"I want to help these guys with my experience and enjoy passing on a bit of knowledge and leading by example. It's nice to play with youngsters because they want to learn and are energetic in the field.

"Carnforth is a young, aspiring club. They are a great set of guys and hopefully the club can keep them together for the future."
