Unibond Challenge Cup
THE GOOD TIMES simply refuse to stop rolling at Giant Axe as Lancaster City progress to the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup after upsetting Ashton United.

The Unibond Premier side arrived at City's fortress knowing they had inflicted one of a few defeats for the Dolly Blues this term; they knocked City out of the FA Cup and in a dominant first-half it looked like they'd do it again.

However their scattergun finishing, the introduction at the break of City centre-back Andrew Teague and some spirited Dolly Blue attacking gave the home side the spoils.

City's best chances of a first-half, were there much changed starting XI looked out of sorts, fell to the lively Adam Farrell who sliced a couple of half-chances wide and opted to pass when in the box when he could and perhaps should have scored.

Ashton bombed forward at every opportunity and proceeded to lose all composure on an imagined twenty-yard line, their crossing and finishing, thankfully for City, was woeful.

Ian Kearney did find the target with a good header that was denied by an even better save from Neil Beesley while Guy Heffernan put his body on the line to make an excellent goal-line clearance after a scramble in the six-yard box.

Teague's introduction at half time was clever, it settled City's back four and he put in a few no nonsense tackles and clearances to calm nerves.

Without the injured Connerton, reputedly hurt while on trial with Carlisle, City were reliant on Farrell and Mark Jackson for goals; Jackson duly obliged.

The excellent Max Rothwell played in Mike Rushton who in turn found Jackson. His shot needed a deflection on its way in but he won't care a smudge.

It's not often a referee can be credited with an assist but Alan Young's decision to play advantage after Neil Marshall was fouled was both correct and truly advantageous for the Dolly Blues. Marshall's long ball found Farrell who beat his man with a deft touch, his shot was saved and Rushton smashed in the rebound.

Farrell worked tirelessly up-front and the wingers' Rushton and Rothwell were ever-probing if lacking a cross or two.

City finished the game on top, Rothwell attacked well and deserved a goal for his efforts; his nice touch over the defender's head was in a different class to his subsequent strike.
