AFTER last week's almost full fixture list it was back to normal as the severe overnight frost knocked out all but 10 games this week in the Lancaster Honda North Lancashire and District League.
Of the games played only two survived in the Premier Division. The clash of the bottom two, Bowerham and Halton Rangers. was one game that survived the frost when the experienced Tony Lee deemed the ground playable.
But it turned out to be a stro
ll in the park for bottom team Bowerham.
They started the game brilliantly and never gave Halton the chance to settle down. Bowerham's all-out attacking policy pushed Halton on to the back foot from the opening whistle.
It was no surprise when Bowerham took the lead. They took the ball off Halton just inside their own half, Joe Bouskill skilfully fed the ball out to the right wing finding man of the match Andy Strachan, who through sheer skill and strength bustled his way through four challenges before shooting in from close range from a narrow angle to give Bowerham a deserved 1-0 lead.
Bowerham continued in the same vein, attacking at every opportunity and it was not long before they went into a 2-0 when again Joe Bouskill was the provider for Simon Gillespie to score.
Bowerham almost took a 3-0 lead when Strachan broke free again only for the Halton keeper made a fantastic save to keep his side in the game.
On one of Halton's rare attacks Warren Goodwin missed a great chance to score when he missed an open goal as the ball hit a divot and went wide.
Halton was punished for this when Bowerham broke away, Gillespie was forced wide by the Halton defence but his shot from an almost impossible angle beat the keeper on the near post and the ball curled into the net at the far post to make it 3-0 after just 30 minutes.
Bowerham played their best football of the season by far and was very impressive in its approach to the game, and on this performance will have a great chance of avoiding relegation.
Every time Bowerham attacked they looked capable of scoring.
Halton's keeper again made a brilliant save, this time to deny Tom Devlin.
Halton again missed a great chance to score when they were clear on goal only for the Bowerham keeper to make a good save.
Bowerham went into a 4-0 lead, again after a good attacking movement resulting in Matthew Buczynski scoring after 40 minutes.
The second half was a bit of an anti-climax after a great first-half performance by the young Bowerham side.
The opening minute of the second half saw Halton denied a goal when the Bowerham keeper pulled off a superb left handed save.
The rest of the half was more even with neither side creating many chances.
The only goal of the second half was scored from the penalty spot by Tom Devlin.
Kirkby Lonsdale's clash with near rivals Ingleton was only given the go ahead by the referee after an inspection just before kick-off.
The game itself was very good with some good football played by both sides.
A draw was the fairest result with a former Kirkby player Nathan Jackson scoring for Ingleton, Andy Metcalfe scored for Kirkby Lonsdale.
This result still leaves both sides in danger of going into the relegation area, with Kirkby third from bottom and Ingleton just three places above.
In Division One only one game survived and that was at Millhead where the home team entertained Storeys Reserves which promised to be a close game with Storeys in second place and Millhead in third.
The game was played on a hard but playable pitch.
There were goals galore as both sides played good attacking football with a twist to the game right at the end.
The game was locked at 3-3 after Matthew Palmer had scored a great hat-trick for Millhead, Christian Nalgo, Robert Kay and Steve Creed for Storeys. In the 89th minute Creed put Storeys into the lead at 4-3 and looked to have stolen all three points.
Then in the 90th minute Millhead thought they got a lucky break when they were awarded a penalty but with the last kick of the game the spot-kick was missed giving Storeys the points and moved them to the top of the division replacing Bolton-le-Sands, Millhead stay in third place.
In Division Two again only one game took place which saw Trimpell move into second place after a brilliant display of attacking and fluent football played throughout the team against bottom side Halton Rangers Reserves. Trimpell gave a debut to 16-year-old Sam Cockburn who played his part in this emphatic win.
Dave Holt gave Trimpell the lead. A brilliant Joe Entwistle goal made it 2-0 at half-time.
The second half started well for Trimpell as they increased its tempo, Sam McKee made it 3-0 before Halton struck with a fine goal scored by Rob Govier.
Trimpell made it 4-1 when veteran Dave Riley scored a good goal after some good one-touch football.
Trimpell tried to turn on the style but was caught out when Ian Harrison scored for Halton to make it 4-2.
At that stage Trimpell decided to turn things round by changing keepers.
They moved original keeper Gareth Pedder to centre forward where he gave Halton a lot of problems with his pace. He went on to score a majestic hat-trick to make the final score 7-2.
In Division Three, three games beat the frost with Galgate Reserves pulling off a great 1-0 win over promotion favourites Moghuls.
Despite playing last week the Moghuls side just could not get into its stride.
Galgate matched the Moghuls side in every department and just about deserved its win with veteran Dave Morgan scoring the all important goal albeit from the penalty spot.
This win moves Galgate up to fifth place with an outside chance of promotion, still with most of the leading group to play.
Burton Thistle and AFC Moorlands played out a goalless draw on a hard pitch at Burton.
Neither side could break the deadlock as both defences were just too good for the attackers. Burton had most chances but lacked the killer punch. It was easy to see why both teams are below half way in the division.
Bolton-le-Sands Reserves played reasonably well against a Gregson side pushing for promotion. The game was end-to-end with both sides trying to win all three points. Gregson needed to win to keep up its momentum.
Bolton-le-Sands have lost all its games so far this season and looked doomed to relegation back to Division Four. They put up a spirited display but lost to a penalty scored by Michael Clegg.
The second goal, scored again by Clegg, was a brilliant individual goal scored from 30 yards.
He spotted the keeper off his line and sent in a delightful lob to seal the points and move his side up to second place.
In Division Four, Burton Thistle Reserves gained ample revenge for a humiliating 10-2 thrashing earlier in the season by College AFC Reserves, by winning the return game at College by 1-0.
Jake Armistead scored a wonderful goal to give his side a good and deserved win.
Gregson Reserves, next to bottom in the division, played leaders Trimpell Reserves on a surprisingly good Far Moor pitch.
The game was quite good with both sides playing the game in a good spirit and were sensible in their approach to the game.
Like its first team, Trimpell introduced another 16-year-old player in Tony Singleton, who played really well for his first appearance in open age football.
Trimpell got off to a good start when they went into a 1-0 courtesy of an own goal, the second scored by veteran Alan Hughes and the third by Matthew Hartley.
New referee Uchenna Ogbannaya did well for only his second game in charge.
Freehold Reserves travelled to newcomers and unbeaten Pilling and fought out a well deserved 3-3 draw in a very entertaining game.
Pilling went 2-0 in front inside the opening 20 minutes with Mark Garside scoring both goals.
Freehold Reserves fought back to level at 2-2 before half-time with a brilliantly taken free-kick from Jimmy Lyons and a rare header by Liam Morgan.
Freehold started the second half like the first, very slowly, and within 10 minutes found themselves trailing by 3-2 when Oliver Hunter scored a good goal.
The game was end-to-end with both sides missing relatively easy chances.
With time almost up Freehold launched a last ditch attack throwing everyone forward in the hope of snatching a draw.
In the last minute of a pulsating game Kyle Davies was brought down in the penalty area, evergreen veteran and captain elected to take the kick and scored to give his side a deserved draw.
Pilling felt they had thrown away two vital promotion points with this draw.
The Lancaster Honda North Lancashire and District Team of the Month for January is Ingleton, the only team to qualify.
