MORECAMBE'S Christie Park campaign got off to a poor start with defeat against Rotherham.
Two first half goals gave Rotherham victory over Sammy McIlroy's side and despite a much better second half display, which saw Neil Wainwright pull a goal back, the Shrimps suffered their first reverse of the season.

The Shrimps got off to the wo
rst possible start when they went a goal down after just seven minutes when new Miller signing Mark Lynch scored a superb opener.

Lynch took the ball on the right hand side of the box and produced a superb left footed curler which beat Barry Roche as it swung into the top right hand corner of the Morecambe goal.

The Shrimps almost replied immediately when Garry Hunter produced an excellent right wing cross for Neil Wainwright at the far post but his header was inches over the bar. Rene Howe then drilled a shot into the side netting after a smart turn in the box as the Shrimps looked to level.

But as the Shrimps threatened to get back in the game Rotherham scored a quality second goal. Reuben Reid played in Mark Hudson and his first time lay off found Ryan Taylor who scored calmly past Roche with a low strike.

The Morecambe keeper had to be at his best to deny Reid in the opening stages of the second half before Morecambe, with Wayne Curtis introduced as a second half sub, had a period on top.

The change almost paid immediate dividends as Morecambe had a good chance to reduce the deficit on 53 minutes when Rene Howe played in Matty Blinkhorn but his shot was blocked by Andy Warrington low to his left.

Neil Wainwright volleyed home a Wayne Curtis cross on 77 minutes to give the Shrimps hope but they could not find a way through the Millers' defence and Rotherham added a third through the excellent Lynch with another curler.

Morecambe: Roche, Parrish, Artell, Bentley, Adams, Wainwright, Hunter, Carr, McLachlan (rep Curtis 45), Howe, Blinkhorn.

Rotherham: Warrington, Lynch, Sharps, Fenton, Green, Mills, Harrison, Hudson, Rhodes, Taylor, Reid.
