SKERTON ABC boxers have had a busy time of late competing in the annual ABA schoolboy championships.
Eight Skerton boxers took part with five winning North West titles. They were Ben 'Boom Boom' Beswick, Kalem 'Dynamite' Dugdale, George Lowe, Reece 'The Best' Macmillan and Hugh Fury.

Skerton's other boxers, Walter Fury, won a prelim fight then lost a close decision. In the next contest, Niall 'The Style' Fielding put in a good effort also despite boxing with a fractured thumb in his right hand as was discovered later, just losing out. Billy 'Lightning' Lee won two prelim fights on the way to the North West final.

Unfortunately, Billy didn't get the verdict in a fight he controlled from the start to finish.

This was much to the dismay of all concerned. Even Billy's opponent's coach came over to say sorry for the decision to Billy.

A letter of complaint has been sent to the ABA regarding this matter.
Next came the quarter finals featuring the top eight boxers of England.
Reece Macmillan was announced as the winner then later told the decision had been reversed much to the disappointment of the Skerton team.

Reece had clearly won the contest but received two warnings in the last 20 seconds of the contest giving four points away.

It was a Newcastle referee, Newcastle judges and a Newcastle boxer. A protest was lodged by Skerton and an inquiry will follow.

Kalem 'Dynamite' Dugdale boxed last year's champ but made it look easy for a comfortable win. This was Kalem's best performance to date. Ben 'Boom Boom' Beswick put in another solid effort winning a close verdict.

Hugh Fury got a bye.

Last Sunday was the semi-finals.

Three boxers took part - Ben, Kalem and Hugh Fury. Ben faced a tough opponent just losing on points. Kalem and Hugh gave their best but lost also.

All in all a great few weeks for a small club up there with the biggest clubs in England.

Skerton ABC have all these boys and more including Tomi 'TNT' Tatham, the knockout king from Bentham, and the return from injury of Johnjo 'Viper' Varey who has issued a nationwide challenge to any nine stone boxer born in 1994.

It is difficult to get opponents for Johnjo because of his punching power. But we have managed to get him a contest this time.
They are in action this Friday (February 26) at The Carleton in Morecambe. Boxing starts at 8pm. Only a few tickets left. Tel: 07810 660918.
