IN the Premier Division of the Lancaster Honda North Lancashire and District Football League, leaders Marsh had a reasonably easy win when they entertained an inconsistent Galgate side.
After playing some excellent football Marsh went into a 1-0 lead with a great goal scored by Jordan Sparks. As Marsh took control of the game, further goals were scored by Alan Tyson with Lee Sparks ensuring a victory for hot favourites for the title
with the third.
Ingleton played well, especially in the first half, when they played Cartmel. Ingleton opened the scoring with a David Whitfield goal quickly followed by a Nathan Jackson goal for Ingleton to hold a 2-0 advantage at half-time. Cartmel piled on the pressure in the second half but a good all-round performance by Ingleton made sure they retained its two goal lead. This win moves Ingleton up to fifth position in the division.
A poor Kirkby Lonsdale side crashed to its worst defeat for many a season when they were routed by a rampant Highgrove side that won by 8-1. Kirkby surprised Highgrove by scoring first inside the first two minutes. They were awarded a free-kick which was brilliantly headed in by Scott Tremble. But within an eight minute spell inside the opening 15 minutes Luke Ogley scored a brilliant hat-trick. After that Kirkby was never in the game as Highgrove started to score almost at will, with Ogley adding another to his tally, plus Damon Grayom, Adrian Diggles and two from young Liam Breslin promoted from the third team for the first time. With games in hand over teams above them Highgrove could still retain their title but they have a very hard run in at the end of the season. Kirkby now face the prospect of trying to avoid relegation as they slump to next to bottom.
Storeys, after losing its last three games, got back to winning ways to keep alive its faint chance of winning the title when they beat fellow challengers Carnforth Rangers by 2-0, both goals being scored by Steven Stirzaker so avenging an early season 8-3 drubbing. This defeat also leaves Carnforth with a mountain to climb if they are to make an impression on the title race. The game itself was nothing special as on the whole they cancelled each other out. The game also saw three penalties awarded and all three missed two taken by Storeys and one by Carnforth, all saved by the keepers.
Slyne-with-Hest played really good football to beat relegation threatened Bentham by 5-0. Apart from goal threats from James Earnshaw, Bentham, without its regular keeper, had to use its manager as emergency keeper, posed little threat to a solid Slyne defence. Lee Fox (2), Sam Sandham, Tom Entwistle and an unfortunate own goal by Alex Thwaite saw Slyne take all points to move up to sixth in the table.
Halton Rangers caused the shock of the day when they nearly beat title challengers Tic Dynamos. The game started well for Halton when they took the lead after just two minutes when Chris Wright latched onto a bad back pass to round the keeper to give Halton the lead. The game turned out to be very good as Dynamos tried to get back into the game. After a decent spell of pressure Dynamos did equalise when Stuart Rushworth scored after 30 minutes. The remainder of the half was even with both sides having chances. The second half started like the first half with Halton making the early running and within three minutes of the re-start they had the chance to go back into the lead when they were awarded a penalty, a penalty they missed.
Halton kept on attacking and was awarded another penalty in the 55th minute, this time Sam Farrow converted to put Halton back into the lead. As Dynamos piled on the pressure looking for the equaliser the Halton side battled well to try and keep the lead. With just five minutes remaining Dynamos made the break through to level the scores when Robert Goldsborough scored. The last minutes of the game was played in Halton's half of the field but Dynamos were thwarted by the brilliance of the Halton keeper who made two fantastic saves to deny the Dynamos side in a game they would have expected to win to keep its title challenge on track.
Bowerham moved out of a relegation place when they deservedly drew with fourth placed Morecambe Royals. The game was spoilt as neither side could keep hold of the ball. The Royals went into a 1-0 half-time lead when Will Rowell scored from the penalty spot after he was fouled. The first 15 minutes of the second half saw Bowerham fight back and equalised when Tom Spencely scored a good goal. Morecambe Royals took control of the game for the last 30 minutes but could not break down a solid Bowerham defence.
In Division One, leaders Bolton-le-Sands dropped further valuable promotion points when they were beaten by a hard working Swarthmoor Social Club side that has only been beaten once this season so far, in its first game against Bolton-le-Sands when they lost at home by 3-2. In its first attack in the opening minute Swarthmoor was awarded a free-kick just inside its own half of the field, the kick was taken by John Rattigan, returning to the side after a long term injury, the kick was long and into the Bolton-le-Sands penalty are where the home defence stood waiting for each other to clear the ball, but only allowed the ball to run unchallenged into the net to give the visitors an early lead.
From then on it was one way traffic towards the Swarthmoor goals, Bolton-le-Sands played really good football going forward and created plenty of chances but squandered them. Swarthmoor was hanging on, rarely mounting any meaningful attacks of its own, as they had to defend its slender lead. Bolton-le-Sands got the goal they deserved when Alex Batson scored the goal they so richly deserved. The end of the half came too quickly for Bolton-le-Sands who could and should have been in an unbeatable position with the great chances they created in a one sided first half.
The second half saw a big transformation in the game as Bolton-le-Sands stopped doing what they did in the first half and that was to play good open football. They allowed Swarthmoor into the game and they grabbed it with both hands. Within three minutes of the re-start Swarthmoor went back into the lead after a Graham Wilcox header from two yards hit the inside of the post and rebounded into the six yard area where Gavin Jolley who was almost on the goal line, unmarked was allowed to poke the ball into the net between two defenders. It was all Swarthmoor from then on as they threatened to score more goals. Bolton-le-Sands was restricted to rare break aways, but the Swarthmoor defence was just too good. With just 10 minutes remaining Swarthmoor made it three after good midfield play and an excellent finish from Graham Wilcox, he beat two defenders and then from 25 yards he sent in an unstoppable shot which curled round the keeper and into the net at the far post.
Second placed Storeys Reserves appeared to be coasting to an easy win as they led Boys Club 3-1 at half-time with goals scored by Callum Redpath and two by Dave Leslie. Boys Club who lost their keeper early in the game replied with a single Daryl McHugh goal. The second half saw a big transformation as the Boys Club side re-grouped and took the game to Storeys with great success, the man of the match turned out to be Joe Proud as he bagged a hat-trick as Boys Club turned the game round to win 4-3.
Marsh United Reserves got back to its early season form when they travelled to Cartmel and came away with a great 2-0 win. The game was always good with both sides playing well together. The only difference between the two teams was the inability of Cartmel to convert its chances, they had more than Marsh but it was goals by Ryan Hammick and Craig Gribbin that made the difference.
Freehold met Millhead in a rehearsal of this weeks cup semi-final. The game was excellent with Millhead the better side in the early stages. Freehold opened the scoring when Danny Murtagh scored. Millhead battled back and took a 2-1 lead at half-time with goals scored by Carl Wakeman and a belter by Matthew Clapp. The second half was again close with Millhead just shading early possession. Gradually Freehold got to grips with the game a got an equaliser they probably deserved on their second half performance. With just 10 minutes remaining Freehold were doing all the pressing, they introduced substitute Ian Palwankar. His response was to score almost immediately to give his side a terrific three points.
In Division Two, Trimpell moved back to the top of this highly competitive division after outclassing Grange, winning by 5-0. Grange had the best of the opening period but soon got pegged back when Trimpell took the lead with a goal scored David Holt. Trimpell went on to claim an easy win after further goals were scored by Graham Cassidy, David Riley, who just cannot stop scoring, Anthony Turner and substitute Gareth Pedder.
Halton Rangers Reserves won its first point of the season when they held leaders at start of play, Allithwaite Rangers and was unlucky not to have won all three points in a terrific game of football. After a good but goal less first half, Halton took the lead when veteran Andy Curwen showed his class by scoring a superb opener. Allithwaite battled back and took their chance to equalise when long serving club man David Addison scored another great goal to add to his collection. This draw drops Allithwaite down to second place but still in with a great chance of gaining promotion .
Torrisholme Fc have lost form at the wrong stage of the season when they lost again to a bottom three team, Bentham Reserves, losing by 3-2. The Bentham side played and battled its way to a great win with its best performance of the season so far. Oliver Harrison, Jake Fawcett and James Barlow. The Torrisholme side that never gave up replied with goals scored by Bobby Townsend and leading scorer Luke Suligowski. Torrisholme are still in third position and just three points behind the leaders with all to play for.
Furness Rovers another side hoping to gain promotion had to fight for every ball for 90 minutes before overcoming a strong Caton United Reserves to win a high scoring game by 4-3. Caton had the best of the first half and deservedly led by two Dave Bamford goals. Furness hardly had a look in, in the first half as Caton threatened to over run them. The second half was much better for Furness when the main threat Bamford was injured and replaced. Furness got back into the game when leading scorer Joe Leslie hit a stunning hat-trick, Andy McDermott added a fourth before Caton hit back to make it 4-3 when Tom Pinnington scored the goal of the game. This win moves Furness into fourth place, and are starting to threaten the leaders in the race for promotion.
In Division Three, Boys Club Reserves played really well to hold Gregson to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling game. The result was in doubt right to the final whistle. The Boys Club leading scorers, James Short now with eight goals scored and John Norman now with nine, scored the goals. A brilliant 25 yard shot by Ben Kershaw and the goal of the game by Brett Farnworth, unfortunately an own goal scored for Gregson Fc in a well deserved drawn game. This one point moves Gregson back to the top of the division on goal difference from Heysham whose game was cancelled due to weather conditions.
Galgate Reserves are closing in on a promotion place after beating rivals for promotion Morecambe Gold for the second time in successive weeks. On both occasions the Gold was far the better side, but failed to capitalise on its supremacy. The Galgate side although much younger than the Gold side also had two of its own veterans in the side. As the game wore on the Gold legs started to tire and Galgate then started to control the game and run out deserved winners by 3-2. Kieron Dodd, Steven Wood and Simon Gould scored the goals for Galgate, in reply Nigel Borrass and David Cross scored for the Gold side who must now be outsiders for promotion.
In Division Four, leaders Trimpell Reserves appeared to be heading for defeat at the hands of a good battling Freehold Reserves side that started really well. They often outplayed the leaders and went into a well deserved 2-0 lead with goals scored by Kyle Davies. Whatever Trimpell tried Freehold countered well and kept the division's leading scorers quiet. An inspired substitution by manager Stephen Jordan changed the game round. He introduced 16-year-old Tony Singleton. Within two minutes he made his mark when he scored his side's first goal. He then set up the equaliser for Aaron Simpson to equalise. The youngster lifted his team with his classy display and set off the four man move which brought the winner which was scored by Duncan Anderton to give Trimpell a narrow and somewhat lucky win at the end.
Second placed Pilling was also involved in a close game when they played Burton Thistle Reserves who are on the edge of the promotion race. Pilling was far the better footballing side throughout but had problems in breaking down a stubborn Burton defence. A draw was probably the fairest result after Peter Baxendale had scored for Burton. Kevin Stockdale got a well deserved equaliser after the move of the match which sliced open the Burton defence.
Arnside Reserves won a high scoring game against lowly Overton and Middleton Reserves. The Overton side did not know when it was beaten as the whole team battled for 90 minutes. Arnside had the more experienced players and it showed as they played most of its football on the ground and was more direct in its approach. Arnside deserved to win but was surprised at the fight put up by the Overton side. But it was goals scored by James Thornton (2), Marco Thompson (2) and James Burke that won the game for Arnside. Damon Ashmore, Richards Lyons and Alan Shanks scored for the Overton side that gave everything in a good performance.
Millhead Reserves remain in second place after a disappointing result against mid-table College AFc Reserves. The best side for most of the game was College, but Millhead stuck to its game plan and eventually got a draw. Darren Maudsley and James Emmott scored for Millhead, Steve Pemberton and golden oldie Phil Huddart scoring his second goal this season and earned his side a draw in a game his side could have won.
Carnforth Rangers A, after a poor start to its first season in the league, are now starting to climb up the division after its fourth win so far. It was a very even game against Ingleton A another young team. Both sides played quite well with nothing much between the teams. Chances were few and far between. Goals were scored by James Weatherall, his first of the season and another one from Jake Beaton. This turned out to be the winning goal for the Carnforth side. Ingleton were never out of the game and a goal by Dave Coggin kept his side in the game but the whistle came too soon for the Ingleton side.
The Lancaster Honda North Lancashire and District Football League 'team of the month for February' has been won by Galgate Reserves who played four games, winning three and drawing one.
