Bay beats US Open for Gary
AMATEUR golfer Gary Wolstenholme may have played in the US Open earlier this month but it couldn't match practising his putting at Morecambe Golf Club.
Wolstenholme got the chance of a lifetime when an injury to Sean O'Hair meant he stepped in as reserve for the Major.
Wolstenholme, who now lives in Heysham, found the Torrey Pines course a tough challenge and missed the cut with scores of 83 and 82.
Wolstenholme, who has connections with the district going back to his schooldays, was still taking in the experience.
He said: "I am still coming to terms with having played the US Open and being able to watch and understand the difficulties they face.
"It was brutally difficult. The grass was different to what we are used to in Europe and it makes so much difference to getting real consistency."
And having recently moved to the district full-time, Wolstenholme is glad to be here.
"I love this area. We have some great golf courses in this part of the world. I don't think people appreciate how good the courses are in this area.
"There are some of the best views you will find anywhere. Step on to the putting green at Morecambe Golf Club and I don't think you will find a better view in the world."
Wolstenholme, 47, had gone over to America after qualifying as an 'alternate', ready to step in if one of the golfers got injured.
And the two-times British Amateur champion learnt he was in the field on Wednesday afternoon, leaving him only hours to prepare.
He was able to get in a quick 18 holes, but he only beat the 6.30pm deadline with one of the marshals driving him around on a buggy for the last five holes!
His preparations were not helped by problems finding accommodation and as he didn't have a caddie with him, he relied on BBC commentator Andrew Cotter.
He said: "I have got some great memories and it is certainly one of the highlights of my career.
"I can't remember the last time I didn't break 80 twice in a row. My scores didn't reflect the golf I had played."
Wolstenholme has moved from Leicester to be with family in Heysham but is still trying to sell his old house – and find a job.
He said: "I have got various attributes I think I can offer. I have good attention to details and I am a good problem solver. I am sure I could be useful to a local business."
