MORECAMBE'S talented crop of young golfers played a significant part in the club's Clayton Trophy win on Sunday.
Four of Morecambe's eight-man team were aged 20 or under but that did not stop the club from making home advantage count as they won by 18 shots from Lancaster. Heysham were five shots further back.

Adam Chester (aged 16), David Gartside (17), Tom McCann (18) and Tom Winn (20) were teamed with more experienced players in the morning foursomes.

And it worked well as Morecambe finished the morning seven points clear of Heysham and – crucially – 15 ahead of Lancaster.

The best foursomes score came from Heysham's Jack Senior and David Hutchinson.

Lancaster came close to pipping Morecambe in the afternoon singles with a 68 from Sam Lavelle and a 69 from Daniel Sefton their stand out rounds.

But consistency from Morecambe, capped off by a 68 from last man Tom Winn, meant they edged a further three shots clear of Lancaster to secure victory. Adrian Lockhart shot 70 for Heysham's best singles score.

Morecambe's win means they are now level with Lancaster overall with 27 Clayton wins each. Heysham have 12 victories.

The Clayton has been contested since 1935.
