Victory for Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club
Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club again won their Division Two National Young Athletes League match recently.
Having tolerated pouring rain in earlier rounds of the competition, the thirty-nine athletes had to contend with high winds at Hynburn for the third fixture of the season.
It was important for the club to extend their two point lead at the top of the Division in order to ensure promotion this season.
The U17 men's section set the tone for the rest of the athletes. Andrew Warren had a busy afternoon, having won the B 800m he went on to compete in both the 3000m and 1500m- more than 5k of running in an afternoon.
The other four members of the team, Matthew Burns, James Crinion, Paul Hodgson and Frank Shepherd all achieved individual wins as well as securing first place in the 4x100m relay. Frank's 100m win won him the club male track athlete of the match.
The U17 women's captain Nia Williams won all three of her individual events and together with Rebecca Mardell, Claire Muir and Abby Rogers won the 4x300m relay.
The last event of the day provided the most excitement when U15 boys Adam Bateson, Callum Mason, Beau Smith and Ben Tocknell beat a strong Kendal team to not only win the 4x400m relay but also break the club record - a record which was set before the boys were born.
Other successes in this age group included personal bests for Sinclair Aranju in both sprints, Luke Hodgson in the shot, Robert Muir in the hurdles and Richard Newsham in the javelin.
Rachael Farthing's continued domination of the hurdles event won her the club female track athlete of the match.
The female club field athlete, Holly Nelson, also competing in this age group won the shot putt.
Christina Bell won the 1500m B race and Chloe Collins, Sarah Hodgson, Isobel Rawlinson and Mary Vaughan-Jones all recorded personal bests.
As usual, Maxine Meju dominated the U13 sprints, recording a new club record in the 150m. Paige Clinton's improvement in the 800m showed her potential and she was joined in the middle distance events by Sarah Bell, Olivia Dickinson and Mary Hodgson.
Bethany Taylor's shot putt demonstrated her ability as a field athlete and Zoe Lynch, Rebecca Hutton and Shannon Greenwood also competed well in the field events.
Another sporting commitment meant the selectors were able to test new blood in the U13 boys' team - and Year 6 athletes Joel Ingham and Ben Rickards clearly have much to offer in this age group.
Levi McCandish won the male field athlete of the match in winning the long jump. Thomas Nolan-Barnes produced a personal best in the shot whilst Jack Lawton once again won the hurdles.
