MORE than 20 new community police officers are to be recruited in Cumbria after a funding increase was approved.
The new budget, agreed by the county's police authority, will also pay for extra community support officers (PCSOs) and support staff.

In addition, organised crime, drugs and counter terrorism departments will benefit from increased recruitment.

A force spokesman said, where possible, the funds would be used to boost the strength of frontline policing.

From April, a total of 63 extra police officers and support staff will be employed. Chief Constable Craig Mackey said: "We are extremely pleased that with the additional funding we can invest in keeping Cumbria safer and stronger. We have been through a robust process which has enabled us to identify our priority areas and this has been reflected in the budget."

Cumbria Police Authority Chair Reg Watson said the new posts would represent "good value for money."
