PARKING charges in south Cumbria could be cut or frozen in a bid to attract more visitors.
South Lakeland District Council is proposing the price-freezes or reductions in parking prices in Ambleside, Kirkby Lonsdale and Bowness.

At Lake Road and Low Fold, Ambleside, there will be no increase in charges and many other car parks will charge just £1 for up to nine hours.

The recommendations will be discussed at a council meeting on February 28.

Coun Graham Vincent, portfolio holder for economic prosperity and transport, said: "With around eight million visitors coming to this area every year, we want to encourage people to shop and browse for longer to help support local businesses.

"This is why we have chosen to cut or freeze the cost of longer-stay car parking while keeping the cost of short-stay car parking to a minimum."

At Rydal Road and Miller Bridge in Ambleside, the cost may fall to 50p for four hours and £1 for nine hours.
