KENDAL Riverside Ltd has announced a major step forward in the £100m regeneration and development programme at K Village with the appointment of the project's construction company and the beginning of the "big build".
Carillion plc, one of the UK's leading commercial construction and support services firms has been awarded the contract to provide comprehensive building and civil engineering services during the first major construction phase of development on the 4
.8acre site. Initial work will focus on the creation of the underground car park and retail storage areas.

John Drummond, Kendal Riverside Ltd Project director explained: "We have now reached a very exciting stage of the development process when on a daily basis the new multi million pound K Village will visibly take shape.

Until now the project team has been extremely busy behind the scenes preparing the site and ensuring that all the correct government and statutory requirements have been met. From now on the local community will be able to share our excitement as they watch the emergence of the new complex as the big build gathers pace."

Initially up to 70 construction workers will be active on site under the leadership of Carillion project manager, Mark Conway. "We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract with Kendal Riverside Ltd and are committed to deliver workmanship of the highest quality, on budget and within the time frame towards a completion late in autumn 2009.

"We look forward to working in Kendal and it is our intention to employ local labour and utilise companies and suppliers within the surrounding area. It is anticipated that numbers on site will initially peak at about 70 during the most intensive part of the construction."

In welcoming the start of building works Coun Gwen Murfin, Mayor of Kendal said: This heralds the real start to Kendal's major development project. We all look forward to a trouble free building program that will deliver the exciting 'K' Village."

"As we begin the real physical work on site we would also like to reassure the community of our commitment to follow best practice in our construction approach. In keeping with planning regulations and with due regard for our neighbours working hours will be from 8am to 6pm with any potentially noisy procedures taking place after 10am and finished by 4pm.

The site will always be closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
