MORE than three million packs of the award-winning Lake District Cheese Company cheddar have now been sold across Britain.
The Cumbrian farmers who supply milk to the First Milk farmer cooperative as well as the 81 employees at the Aspatria site are delighted at reaching the significant milestone.
Steve Dunning farms near Penrith in Cumbria and is chairman of First M
ilk's farmer representative group. He said members were extremely proud to support their own cheddar brand.
"Our Lake District Cheese Company brand is promoting excellence to the nation. As the only large scale dairy processor in Cumbria, we are putting The Lake District on the map as the leading dairy county."
The Lake District Cheese Company range has gone from strength to strength since its launch 18 months ago. Now found on shelves in Morrisons stores across England, the brand is also stocked in the northern stores of Tesco, ASDA, Somerfield, Waitrose and Booths as well as in Cumbrian farm shops and local retailers.
The cheddar has also benefited by moving into convenient re-closable zip-lock packaging.
Two recent promotions in ASDA and Tesco stores across the country have introduced the cheddar to a new audience while the advertising sponsorship deal with the 2009 Rugby Super League also brought nationwide brand recognition.
Andrew Pearson, site manager at the Lake District Creamery, said the team was delighted.
"The site team are all ambassadors for our Lake District cheese. We are keen to achieve nationwide recognition for our cheese."
