ONE of the longest running water festivals in the UK gets underway in the Lakeland village of Coniston on July 11 and 12, featuring a host of water-based fun and activities, and for the very first time, a special stone skimming competition.
The Coniston Water Festival , running over a weekend of July dates back to the 19th century and offers visitors and locals alike the opportunity to celebrate and be a part of the history and culture of the iconic lake and the surrounding area.

Bringing a contemporary twist to the proceedings this year is an exciting competition being held in Coniston for the first time – The 2nd leg of the All England Open Skimming Championships.

The Skimming Championships promises to be a popular event for all the family with categories for the Under 10's, 10-15s, and 15+ to adults.

On an expanse of water synonymous with breaking World Records, the opportunity to beat the current record of 63 metres is there for the taking. Rules state that, for a successful throw, stones must bounce no fewer than three times, which will be a true test of skill for entrants.

Other water-based highlights will include the now legendary duck race, the Big Fat Canoe Race and, new for 2008, the Little Fat Canoe Race for younger competitors, sailing, kayaking and lake cruises, and a high-adrenalin 'It's a Lake Knockout' competition for the more energetic.

For those without sturdy sea legs, there are plenty of dry land activities on offer including street events, market stalls serving local produce from home-made cakes to real ales, a BBQ and live music, promising a fun, festival atmosphere over the entire weekend.

David Coxon, chairman of the festival, said: "We always try to do something innovative each year."
