SOME of the world's most daring explorers will share their tales of high adventure at this year's Cumberland Ale Keswick Mountain Festival from May 14 to 18.
Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott and Andy Kirkpatrick will be among the speakers appearing at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick as part of this year's festival.

Visitors will hear inspiring accounts of dramatic feats including a crawl down the Ogre in Pakistan, a winter ascent of Torre Egger and an Arctic expedition across Canada.

Martin Lankester, from the Cumberland Ale Keswick Mountain Festival, says: "This year's event boasts the biggest and best line-up of speakers we've ever seen and confirms the festival's place as the finest celebration of the great outdoors in the UK."

Esteemed mountaineer Doug Scott will recount the epic battle he and Sir Chris Bonington faced when they tackled the suitably named Ogre in the Karakorum mountain range in Pakistan.

Their eight-day descent in a raging storm, where both men sustained serious injuries, is one of the all-time classic mountaineering tales.

Sir Chris Bonington will give a lecture on The Everest Years, describing all four of his attempts, climaxing with the successful ascent with the Norwegian Expedition in 1985. Video clips and sound effects will bring to life his most important and demanding expeditions.

Another festival highlight is Andy Kirkpatrick. He has been described as "one of the most remarkable storytellers" who "turns tales of near death into philosophical and comic scenarios worthy of Samuel Beckett or Monty Python".

Tickets for the talks are on sale from the Theatre by the Lake by phoning 017687-74411. For a programme go to www.keswickmountainfestival.co.uk.
