CUMBRIA Tourism's popular website is in the running for a major industry award this week.
The 2009 Travelmole Web Awards take place on Wednesday, June 24 at Canada House in London and www.golakes.co.uk has been shortlisted for 'Best Tourist Board Website'.

This year, for the first time ever, the travel industry and actual travellers ha
d the opportunity to vote online to determine the final shortlist, and more than 15,000 votes were cast across the 15 different categories.

The golakes website is a major portal for thousands of Cumbria's tourism businesses, including accommodation and visitor attractions, which rely on it to generate visits and bookings from people coming into the area. It is also a firm favourite with holidaymakers as millions turn to it when looking to plan and arrange a break in the Lake District and Cumbria.

People can arrange places to stay, things to do, look for activities and places to eat and drink, and can now buy books and maps or even tickets for events prior to arriving in the area.

It receives over 300,000 visits each month and has generated more than £1.4 million in bookings for Cumbria's tourism businesses so far this year.

Ian Stephens, chief executive at Cumbria Tourism, said: "Golakes is consistently proving itself as a hugely effective resource and now to be recognised as an outstanding website is a great credit to their hardworking e-tourism team.
