TWO Castles Housing Association is backing the findings of a report into rural housing, which calls for strictly-controlled housing development in rural areas to allow for more affordable homes – with the condition that they are sold to local workers.
The lack of affordable housing in South Lakes and the Lake District is a big issue.

Published and commissioned by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the recommendations would allow people to remain or return to rural areas for work in which they grew u
p. Many people are currently being forced out of their local area because of high prices – many more than 10 times the average salary – and the demand for second or holiday homes.

Stephanie Murphy, chief executive of Two Castles Housing Association, said: "We welcome the report published on rural housing. Two Castles contributed to this after meeting with Liberal Democrat MP, Matthew Taylor, who was leading this piece of work.

"Mr Taylor visited one of our schemes in Cumbria as part of his fact-finding and we, together with the Lake District National Park, were able to highlight first hand some of the issues faced by people on lower incomes.

"We were also able to demonstrate how important it is to be able to build high-quality affordable homes such as the one visited at Staveley, near Windermere.

"Two Castles will continue to support the community by building affordable housing in rural areas."
