A TRAIN operating company has joined forces with the Forestry Commission and pledged more than £100,000 in a five-year project to help improve the bio-diversity of woodlands close to train stations and routes and build links with local communities.
First TransPennine Express (FTPE) has committed to supporting improvements at 51 locations across their network in the North of England and Scotland. The official launch is taking place tomorrow Wednesday, at Grange-over-Sands Community Orchard with
the chairman of the Forestry Commission, Lord Clark of Windermere.

The Forestry Commission is working with FTPE to identify existing and new woodlands across the network where tree planting and maintenance works will bring maximum benefits for local communities while boosting the appearance and bio-diversity of areas close to stations and train lines. As well as identifying the schemes to be supported the Commission will provide advice.

The partnership also involves FTPE employees who have volunteered to improve and sustain woodland and associated open areas across three English regions: North West England, Yorkshire and the Humber, North East England and across Scotland.

Vernon Barker, managing director of First TransPennine Express said: "It is fantastic to be able to work with the Forestry Commission to help improve areas across our network."
