GARDENERS at the world-famous Levens Hall have unveiled their newest attraction for the summer season – a 500-metre labyrinth made entirely from natural willow wood.
Over 4,000 willow rods over four-metres long have been knitted together in a painstaking task creating a natural "Living Labyrinth" for visitors to explore during trips around the famous topiary gardens and estate.

Over the coming months, the labyrinth will continue to grow and flower too – becoming denser and making it a greater puzzle for those venturing inside.

Staff spent two months weaving rods vertically, horizontally and diagonally to create over 500 metres of "fedging" – a combination of a fence and a hedge! Visitors are challenged to find their way to the centre of the Labyrinth where they will find a superb bronze hare by acclaimed local sculptor, Libby Edmondson.

Chris Crowder, Head Gardener at Levens, said: "We had great fun planning and making the Labyrinth and can now see how much it is enjoyed by our visitors.

"The green shoots are now in abundance making the task of finding the centre of the Labyrinth much more difficult."
