A SERVICE which helps elderly people in Cumbria stay in their own homes and out of hospital is being extended for £480,000.
The scheme enables trained workers to carry out basic health care tasks, alongside their social care role, such as helping with washing and bathing.

New responsibilities include changing dressings and providing basic health care assistance.

Cumbria county council has joined forces with Cumbria Primary Care Trust to expand it into Eden and Barrow.

The service already operates in Carlisle and West Cumbria, where it has helped reduce avoidable hospital admissions.

It also supports older people who need extra help to return home after a stay in hospital.

Jill Stannard, for the county council said: "Given the choice, older people want to stay in their own homes."
