LATE last year, children from Ghyllside Primary School dug out their pens and pencils to design their dream playground and now, 10 months later, dreams are about to come true thanks largely to the local Asda store in Kendal and support from parents, staff and the school's PTA.
Through support from the Asda Foundation, Asda's charitable trust, Asda has committed to funding the £15,000 needed for the school project on top of the £3,000 the school had raised, along with materials kindly donated by local businesses.

The pla
yground is becoming a haven for children with bushes and trees, wooden pathways, dens and a large sandpit replacing the tarmac that currently fills the area. There will also be a special area to allow the children to grow their own fruit and vegetables as well as an area covered by a canopy which will allow lessons to be conducted outside whatever the weather which will promote healthy well being. General store manager, Mike Kenny, said: "This is such a fantastic project and we are proud to be part of it. Like customers coming into our new and improved store, the children at Ghyllside Primary will soon see lots of new and fun changes to their playground."

Gill Mason and Sam Metcalfe, teachers at Ghyllside Primary School, added: "Young children thrive on making imaginary worlds within enclosures in the outdoors.

"Here, they can pretend to be in the jungle, create a police station, or go on an adventure, all in the safety and security of the playground.

The playground will officially open on July 16.
