OFFICIALS and Members of the Wainwright Society have raised cash to pay for repairs to a memorial window in the Lake District's 'Church on the Rock' at Buttermere.
The window, which was damaged during the February storms, had to be boarded up until repairs could be carried out.

The church and the window are of special significance to fans of Alfred Wainwright, the celebrated Lake District guidebook author. His ashes are scattered on Haystacks, the fell which is framed in view from the window of St James's Church.

Initially the cost would have come out of parish funds, but when John Burland, press & publicity officer for the society, put details on the society's website members donated money towards the repair.

It has taken just over five weeks to raise the £1,100 needed. The window was erected in 1991 and the church is one place, if you are going on Haystacks, where a lot of people will visit to look at the view.

It was Wainwright's wish to have his ashes scattered on Haystacks, alongside one of the fell top tarns. Following the severe storms earlier this year the vicar, the Rev Margaret Jenkinson, decided to have the Wainwright window boarded up until the frame could be strengthened.

The window had developed a huge bulge in the panes of leaded glass, which were already stressed by years of exposure to the elements.

Meanwhile members of the Wainwright Society will be in the Lake District between May 14 and 18 for the Keswick Mountain Festival when they are attempting a series of ascents of Wainwright routes in Book 6, The North-Western Fells, to raise funds for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team.

Anyone wishing to add to this sponsorship can contact the society at publicity@wainwright.org.uk.

There will also be a stand from the society at Crow Park during the period of the festival.
