Through Bassenthwaite Reflections, people living and working around the lake say the last three years have not only produced a raft of valuable environmental initiatives, but touched hearts and minds.

The Heritage Lottery Fund backed programme of 30 projects started in 2007 and will draw to a close at the end of this year.

A study to assess reaction to Reflections targeted 450 people. The feedback for a campaign to encourage communities to take a hand in protecting their lake and landscape made heartening reading.

Head of Reflections, Martin Varley, said: "The positive replies have made us immensely proud. People have said how much they valued getting involved and being part of the legacies we'll leave behind; a nature reserve, important bridge, footpaths and the list goes on."

People were asked to rate how their understanding of lake issues had changed from the start of the programme to now. The overwhelming response was they had become informed.

"We set out to get people involved and the good news from the survey is that they are, and for the right reasons," added Martin. "People believe that their actions can make a difference.

"Research carried out in 2005 found people had little interest in Bassenthwaite's lake or landscape. Reflections has helped achieve a 365 degree shift in attitudes and aspirations.

"We are very encouraged by the results. We set out to get communities involved in sharing the issues, and where possible help work on possible solutions.

"Through our 30 projects – nine more than the original target – countless people have learned new skills and made a lasting contribution to this precious place. People understand so much more now. Reflections will leave sound foundations on which to continue the preservation of our heritage."
