REMEMBRANCE Day services took place across the region for those who died fighting for their country.
Ex-servicemen and women were joined by church and civic leaders to pay tribute at ceremonies and parades in Carlisle, Kendal and Penrith.
Similar services were held in Carnforth, Lancaster and Morecambe, with smaller parades taking place in towns and villages throughout Cumbria and North Lancashire.
At the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, the Queen led the nation in a two-minute silence at 11am on Sunday morning.
However just over an hour later Remembrance Day was marred by the news of a bomb attack on a patrol boat in Basra, which killed four British soldiers. Three more soldiers were seriously injured in the attack.
Government defence secretary Des Browne said: "This is a stark reminder of the perils our armed forces face."
