Campaigners lose fight to save 34 post offices
THIRTY-FOUR post offices are to close across Cumbria with a further 10 to be replaced by different services.
The Post Office has also announced that a consultation is to take place over the future of one more branch.
The move is part of wider proposals to reduce the number of branches nationwide by up to 2,500.
Closures include branches in Carlisle, Dalton-in-Furness, Ulverson, Millom, Kendal, Appleby and Workington.
Residents ran major campaigns to save the post offices at Beetham, Greenodd and Backbarrow.
The move follows a six-week local consultation, during which Post Office Ltd attended 26 public meetings and received about 2,900 responses.
As a result of issues raised the post office in Botcherby, which was originally proposed for closure, is to remain open.
Instead, the branch in Little Langdale is now earmarked for closure with a consultation due to take place in due course.
Richard Lynds, Post Office Ltd's network development manager for the North West, said: "We believe that the plan announced today offers our customers in this area the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future, bearing in mind the Government's minimum access criteria and the other factors the Government has asked us to consider."
Ten of those announced could be replaced by a mobile service.
