Europe Day to be celebrated in Carlisle Library
CARLISLE Library will have a truly international flavour next month as library members and shoppers in The Lanes are invited to help celebrate Europe Day.
The public are being invited to taste food from different European countries and test their knowledge on Europe in a fun quiz and at the event on Saturday 8th May from 10am to 2.30pm.
The event has been organised by Europe Direct Cumbria along with the county's library service. Europe Direct is a county council-run service which aims to create a strong voice for Cumbria in Europe as well as highlighting to Cumbrians what Europe can offer them.
A range of information will be available at the event about living, working or studying in the EU, consumer information, and learning a foreign language. There will also be information on what people are entitled to as European citizens and the very latest EU news on a whole range of subjects from health, climate change, culture, sport, heritage and lifelong learning.
Advice on anything from using a mobile phone while on holiday to organising a foreign exchange will be readily available on the day, and people don't need to book - they can just turn up on the day.
In May 1950 the first move was made towards the creation of what is now known as the European Union. During the Milan Summit of EU leaders in 1985, it was decided to celebrate 'Europe Day' as a fun way of raising awareness and promoting inter-cultural understanding.
