Laurel and Hardy statue to be at centre of south Lakes town revamp

WORK is to begin on a £500,000 town centre upgrade which include improved pavements and a centrepiece statue.

As well as improving roads, the town centre square in Ulverston will become home to a Laurel and Hardy statue.

The work will change the road alignment in the square, resurface pedestrian areas and move the roundabout to create a wider pavement at Coronation Hall.

The statue will stand outside the Hall. Stan Laurel, was born in Ulverston in 1890, but moved to America in 1916.

During the work there will be some traffic disruption, but shoppers can still walk and drive into the square, and local businesses will stay open.

It is expected to take just over two months.

The statue captures the silver screen legends leaning against a fully working lamppost with a dog yapping at their feet.

It will be positioned on the pavement outside the Coronation Hall theatre, where the duo made a public appearance on the balcony in 1947.

The statue, created by sculptor Graham Ibbeson, has been in storage since 2005.

English Heritage and the Friends of the Laurel and Hardy Statue group are funding the town centre revamp.
