Visit Cumbria's treasures on Heritage Open Days

SPECIAL days earmarked to celebrate the country's compelling past will see a roadshow heralding Lake District archaeology.

From 9 to 14 September local history will be highlighted and an invitation has been thrown out to turn up to see ancient relics, exhibitions, meet experts and find out more about a fascinating subject.

Lake District National Park's archaeology and heritage adviser, Eleanor Kingston said the idea of Heritage Open Days was to reach as many people as possible and encourage an interest in the past.

She explained: "Linking in with the Civic Trust and English Heritage, we want to bring local history and culture to life through these free events. There is a fantastic programme and people can see some real artefacts, including 4,000 year-old axes and Roman pottery.

"At Millom, individuals and organisations have joined forces to provide some great options and in Whitehaven county archaeology staff will be sharing the floor with the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

"There will be a warm welcome to everyone who enjoys history and wants to find out more about their area.

"At Windermere, a Cumberland Tattie Pot or veggie supper beckons, so there is literally something for all tastes, as well as all ages," Eleanor Kingston added."

Activities and venues include:

* September 9, Beacon Museum, Whitehaven, heritage fair from 1 to 4.0 pm

* September 12, YHA Windermere (seen left), archaeology drop-in sessions 6.30 to 8 pm
