Super Scott is penalty King

IN the 848848 Taxis/Sam Price Memorial Cup semi-finals, Highgrove met renowned cup fighters Cartmel and District.

The first half ended without a goal being scored but the second half was just 10 minutes old when a 20 yard pass from inside the Highgrove half of the field was collected by Rikki Ball.

His first touch was not brilliant and the ball appeared to run away from him but Cartmel’s keeper was slow to react and Ball fired his side into a 1-0 lead.

Things got worse for Cartmel when shortly afterwards Highgrove doubled their lead when they were awarded a controversial penalty, the old war horse Russell Mitchell converted the spot-kick with ease.

Cartmel, as ever, would not give up chasing and reduced the arrears with a well worked goal, the trickery of their left winger crossed an inch perfect cross to the outstanding Phil Gillette who turned in mid-air to send the ball just inside the post with the keeper wrong footed.

With just five minutes of the 90 remaining Cartmel got their equaliser with another header, this time from Matthew Burrows who directed the ball out of the reach of the keeper.

This brought extra time, neither side appeared to tire and they gave everything to try and win it without the need of penalties, but neither side could create another decent goal scoring opportunity, so the tie had to be settled on spot kicks.

Highgrove needed to score from the last of their five penalties, up stepped Scott King who just managed to squeeze the ball past the Cartmel keeper to ensure the win.

In the other semi-final, Carnforth Rangers entertained Bowerham/Furness United in a very thrilling and open game.

Carnforth had the man of the match in long serving Gavin Darby, he covered every blade of grass in his side’s cause and scored a great goal worthy of winning any game.

Bowerham had enough of their own chances to have won but on the day it was Carnforth who won through to meet Highgrove in the final. This final will be played on Monday, April 23, on Giant Axe, Lancaster, kick-off 7-30pm.
