Words by the Water Literature Festival, Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, Cumbria until March 9, 2008
WORDS by the Water Literature Festival is coming up fast with a fabulous range of writers in all genres.
Poet Alice Oswald recently featured in the Times list of the best British writers in the last 50 years. 'Dart' was awarded the 2002 T.S.Elli
ot prize and her latest volume 'Woods etc.' continues her quest to express her love of the countryside and rural life.
She's already won over audiences in the South West with her engaging and thoughtful performances. Those in Cumbria are in for a treat. She is appearing at the festival on Monday, March 3 at 10am and also is judge of the Mirehouse Poetry compeition and will be reading as part of the prize giving at Mirehouse on Sunday, March 2 at 2.30pm.
More treats are in store with poet, broadcaster, and critic Tom Paulin, who won the Somerset Maugham prize for his first collection of poetry 'A State of Justice'. Now he turns his attention to the work of other poets.
On Monday, March 3, 3.30pm he will discuss the secret life of poems, exploring the hidden dynamics, the power to move and affect the reader, that lies within the best poetry.
And finally, Sean O'Brien, poet, playwright, broadcaster and winner of this year's T.S.Eliot prize. His recent, dramatically compelling poems take the reader on a journey through a dark, watery, subterranean world.
On Thursday, March 6, 11.45am he will be giving a talk and readings from his latest collection, The Drowned Book, which won the Forward Prize in 2007.
He is also hosting a poetry reading/ discussion on Wednesday March 5, 4 – 5.30pm. Don't miss this rare chance to engage one of the country's finest poets in conversation.
