National Trust opens its doors
STAFF at National Trust properties across Cumbria have been busy making the final preparations for the official start of the trust's new season.
Acorn Bank Garden, Hill Top, the Beatrix Potter Gallery and Townend historic house by Windermere, Wordsworth House and garden, Sizergh Castle and Garden have just re-opened while the Steam Yacht Gondola has just last weekend been back on the water.
Liz Houseman, communications officer said: "We have been looking forward to an exciting and busy season this year with some fantastic events ranging from our popular Easter Egg trails supported by Cadbury; Georgian cookery and learning days at Wordsworth House; the 'Tales of Sawrey' exhibition at the Beatrix Potter Gallery; 1940s style celebrations at Townend historic house; art and crafts sessions for the family at Sizergh Castle and some spectacular flowerings in the gardens at Wordsworth House, Acorn Bank and Sizergh Castle."
"At Acorn Bank there's the chance to see the newly restored watermill in the grounds; at Force Crag Mine, Borrowdale, you can learn about the last mineral mine to be worked in the Lake District or for those who love the outdoors they can take a walk with one of our estate team at Sizergh Castle or in the Borrowdale valley.
"On a more serious note we're trying to reduce our impact on the environment and this year Steam Yacht Gondola, which sails on Coniston Water, will go green as it swaps its coal for 'Blazer' logs made from wood waste to run the furnace reducing its carbon emissions.
"If you love to explore the countryside then why not drop in at one of our cafes; Sizergh Castle, Kendal or Acorn Bank, Penrith, where you can enjoy delicious cakes, soups and sandwiches, all made from local produce.
"If you love rhubarb then make your way to Acorn Bank, where the cook will be making puddings and pies, from the 10 varieties of rhubarb which grown in the garden there," she added.
Due to popular demand Hill Top and the Beatrix Potter Gallery will be open six days a week giving more people the opportunity to view the Beatrix Potter's artwork and personal collections.
"We've so much to do throughout the year – just take a look at our website for details of opening times, events and projects going on at National Trust properties – log on to www.nationaltrust. org.uk," Liz Housman added.
